5 Basic BODY TYPES and How to DRESS them

Understanding your body type is crucial for effective dressing even on the dance floor, because it helps you select dresses that enhances your natural shape and boosts your confidence. Here are several reasons why knowing your body type is beneficial:

Finding Flattering Cuts: Knowing your body type allows you to choose pieces that highlight your best features and avoid those that may not flatter you as much.

Boosting Self-Esteem: When you feel good in a dress, it translates into greater confidence on the dance floor.

Personal Style Development: Knowing your body type can serve as a foundation for developing your personal style and for creating memorable signature look.

Navigating Fashion Trends: Even in Dance Sport we recognize certain fashion trends that dominate the dance floor and knowing your body type can help you discern which trends are worth trying and which might not suit your shape.

Avoiding Frustration: By understanding which styles are likely to work for you, you can save time and money and reduce frustration when shopping for the perfect dance dress.

These are 5 basic body shapes, and each one is flattered by a different kind of dress. Our eyes are naturally drawn to balance. The Hourglass silhouette is the most basic balanced shape, but that doesn’t mean you are trying to only replicate those proportions. Height and weight also matters when it comes to creating the perfect dress.

It might be difficult to categories your body into just one of the basic body shapes. Your body might be combination of two.

1. Rectangle

(AI-generated image)

As a rectangle you have a rectangular silhouette where your shoulders, waist, and hips are about the same width. Rectangles tend to be taller and lean. They are not particularly curvy, the waist is not well-defined, and the bottom is rather flat.

The goal to dress a rectangle body shape effectively, is to create the illusion of curves and define the waist while maintaining balance between the upper and lower body. Here are some key strategies and recommendations:

Volume: Incorporate volume around the bust and hips to create curves. Tops with ruffles, fringe and other embellishments, or wider sleeves can enhance the upper body.

Define the Waist: Use belts or choose dresses with defined waists to create shape. A darker belt can visually slim the waist.

Color and Patterns: Experiment with bold colors and patterns, particularly on the upper body and lower body, while keeping the waist area more subdued to avoid drawing attention there.

Best Styles: Choose a dress that will create a flattering silhouette by drawing in the waist. A-line and Fit-and-Flare Dresses; these styles add volume without overwhelming the frame. Princess seam and Empire line dresses; these styles help to define the waist while providing a balanced look

Necklines: To create some curves, round necklines - such as scoop or jewel necklines, are excellent choices. Lower, wider necklines - such as wide V, slash, scoop or sweetheart necklines, visually lengthen the shoulder and bust area. Embellishments around the décolletage, lace trims and ruffles can also help direct the attention upwards and create additional volume. If you want to accentuate your slender look, choose narrow necklines - such as turtlenecks, mandarin, crew, funnel and halter necklines (and don't forget to define the waist).

Sleeves: The right type of sleeve for the rectangle body adds interest and volume to the upper or lower body - depending on the sleeve length. Choose  sleeve styles that are embellished, as these will draw attention. You can also create volume with loose and wide sleeves - like flared, princess, puff or flutter sleeves. Any sleeve length will work for your body type.

Avoid these styling mistakes:

Low or Drop Waistlines: These can elongate the rectangle shape and diminish waist definition.

Straight Silhouettes: Steer clear of dresses that creates a long vertical line without breaks, as this can emphasize the rectangular shape.

Wrong necklines: Avoid necklines that will add squareness to your body frame.

2. Pear

(AI-generated image)

A pear-shaped silhouette is when the hips are wider than the bust and the waist is defined. Other characteristics of this body shape can be bigger thighs, slim arms and narrow shoulders.

To dress a pear-shaped body type effectively, is to balance the proportions between the upper and lower body. This involves emphasizing the upper body while de-emphasizing the hips and thighs. Here are key styling tips and clothing recommendations:

Colors and Patterns: Choose tops in bright colors or with eye-catching patterns to draw attention upwards. Look for embellishments, ruffles, fringes or structured shoulders to add volume to the upper body.

Necklines: Best tops are off-the-shoulder, boat neck, or V-neck styles to create a broader shoulder line and highlight the neckline, select fitted tops that accentuate the waist.

Styles: Choose a dress that will create a flattering silhouette by drawing in the waist. A-line and Fit-and-Flare Dresses; these styles are ideal as they fit at the waist and flare out, helping to conceal wider hips while showcasing a defined waist.

Define the Waist: Look for dresses with a defined waistline, to enhance your silhouette. Belts are also a good way to showcase your waist line.

Volume: Dresses with puff sleeves or statement shoulders can broaden the shoulder line and create an overall balanced appearanceHigh-neck or structured shoulder designs can also help create balance.

Sleeves: The right type of sleeve adds interest and volume to the upper body, depending on the sleeve length. Best sleeves are embellished, as these will draw attention. You can also create volume with loose and wide sleeves - like flared, princess, puff or flutter sleeves. Any sleeve length will work for your body type.

Avoid these styling mistakes:

Boxy Shape: boxy or oversized styles that hide your shape and waist.

Emphasizing Hips:  Avoid details, embellishments and horizontal skirt lines on your thigh and hip area and belts on your hips. Also, steer clear of peplums, ruffles and styles that would add additional volume to the hips.

Tight fit: Stay away from overly tight skirts and dresses in the hip and thigh area.

Full Skirts: avoid too-full skirts and skirts with heavy horizontal details that exaggerate your body shape, such as frilly tiers.

3. Inverted Triangle

(AI-generated image)

Inverted triangle body shape is characterized by broader shoulders and a narrower waist and hips. This body type has little to no waist definition and projects sporty and athletic physique.

The key is, to create balance by minimizing volume around the shoulders and adding more volume to the hips and lower body. Here are some tips to help you dress your inverted triangle figure:

Volume: Add volume and interest to your hips and bottom to make them look curvier and your shoulders smaller.

Necklines: Necklines should be slim and long to visually reduce the width of the upper body. Deep and narrow scoop, U or V necklines are the best along with asymmetric styles. And if you have a small bust, halter necks can help elongate your silhouette. Strapless tops are a great way of showing off your shoulders. But make sure you balance them out by adding volume to the hips.

Sleeves: If the sleeve is short, fitted styles look the best. For long sleeves, try adding a volume around your hips; soft sleeves that flare such as raglans, kimono, or dolman sleeves.

Styles: Wear dresses that flare out from the waist to add volume to your hips. You can use belts and horizontal lines or embellishments such as appliques, fringes or ruffles that accentuate your hips and visually create illusion of curves. Pleated dresses are also flattering. Tiered skirts, volume or dropped waistlines also work well. Details such as panels and vertical lines at the top ending in a full skirt are good to add dimension and interest to the hip area.

Colors and Patterns: Choose bright or light-colored bottoms to draw the eye downward. Soften the broad shoulder line with soft, draping, and weighty fabrics. Choose dresses with small prints or vertical lines to elongate your figure.

Define the Waist: Use belts to cinch at the waist and create the illusion of curves, wear statement belts, corset-style belts, or waist-cinching accessories to draw attention to your waist

Avoid these styling mistakes:

Boxy Style: Avoid boxy or overly baggy styles that hide your waist. Avoid pencil skirts and opt for A-line dresses instead. Keep away from skinny and tight dresses as well as narrowing hemlines that visually reduce the lower body.

Wrong Neckline: Steer clear of wide necklines, shoulder pads, and embellishments around the shoulders that can further broaden your upper body. Also styles off-shoulder, bateau and square. Avoid cropped tops that end at the waist and details or embellishments around the upper body.

Emphasizing Upper Body: Steer clear of patterns on your tops and scarves around your neck and shoulders.

4. Hourglass

(AI-generated image)

Like an hourglass, this body type has a bust and hips that are similar width with a narrow waist. The shoulders are slightly round and the legs are in proportion with the upper body.

To effectively dress an hourglass body shape, highlight the natural curves while maintaining balance between the upper and lower body. Here are some essential tips and guidelines:

Accentuate the Waist: The hourglass figure is characterized by a defined waist, so it's crucial to emphasize this feature. Use belts, high-waisted skirts, and dresses that cinch at the waist to draw attention to this area.

Fabrics and Patterns: Soft and flexible fabrics are ideal as they adapt to your shape without adding bulk. Avoid stiff materials that can create a boxy look.

Necklines: Look for tops that are fitted or slightly tailored. V-neck, scoop, or sweetheart necklines are particularly flattering, as they draw attention to the face and balance the bust.

Volume: Ensure that the clothing you choose does not make you appear top-heavy or bottom-heavy. Maintain balanced body proportion to enhance your naturally beautiful figure.

Styles: Choose dresses that define the waist and complement the curves. Dresses that fit at the waist and gently flare out are excellent choices. Full circle skirts are also great because they make the waist look even smaller.

Sleeves: You have a variety of sleeves to choose from. Always make sure the sleeve doesn't add unnecessary volume to your upper body. Keep the style simple, use flowing fabrics to ensure the sleeves complement your balanced proportions.

Avoid these styling mistakes:

Avoid Boxy Cuts: Steer clear of straight-cut or oversized tops that hide the waist and can make you appear shapeless.

Waist Proportions: Avoid dresses with high empire waists or very low waistlines, as these can distort your proportions.

Highlighting Waist: Avoid drawing attention to the hips or shoulders in order to maintain the natural balance of your body's silhouette.

Necklines: Avoid wide necklines, square and boat necks, as well as high necklines and turtlenecks,

5. Apple

(AI-generated image)

Typical characteristics of the apple body shape are an average or larger bust, wider ribcage and upper back, narrow hips and full midsection. This body type usually has slim limbs and nice legs.

The key to dressing an apple body type effectively, is to create balance and emphasize your best features while de-emphasizing the midsection. Here are some essential styling tips that work well for this body shape.

Volume: Choose styles that flow over the midsection, such as empire waist and A-line dresses, to avoid clinging to the tummy area.

Define the Waist: High-waisted skirts or empire style dresses can visually redefine the waist. Consider using belts to create a more defined silhouette. Medium to wide belts tends to work the best.

Patterns and Colors: Use bold colors and patterns on the lower half to draw attention away from the upper body. This can help create more balanced look.

Styles: Keep details above the bustline and below the hipline; for everything in between keep it plain and simple. Long necklaces and statement earrings can elongate the torso and enhance your overall appearance. Empire waist and A-line dresses help draw attention to the bust and flow over the midsection, creating a flattering silhouette.

Sleeves: Choose loose, flared sleeves to build volume on the upper body. Avoid fitted sleeves.

Necklines: Necklines should break up the chest vertically; to create a visual separation between bust and tummy and take attention away from the fuller midsection. To accomplish this, necklines should be both wide and low. A wide neckline will ensure your shoulders appear wider, while a low neckline will help to slim the upper body and draw attention upwards.

Avoid these styling mistakes:

Overly Loose or Tight Clothing: Ensure that your dresses fit well. Avoid styles that are too tight or too loose, as they can emphasize the midsection negatively.

Bulk on the Upper Body: Avoid tops with heavy embellishments or ruffles around the bust and midsection.

Neglecting Proportions: Focus on balancing your silhouette by accentuating your legs and avoiding details that widen the upper body.

By following these guidelines and selecting the right pieces, you can enhance your natural silhouette and feel confident in your style.

Happy dancing!
